The HGe 4/4 I (11-15) was the first electrical locomotive of the former Vis-Zermatt-Bahn (VZ). This company is part of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB) these days.
These locomotives were built during the 1920’s by the Schweizerische Lokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik (SLM) and Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon (MFO). They are called Crocodile because of the lower front-ends.
In 1929 the VZ decided to electrify their track with 11.000V, similar to the Rhaetian Railways. With this choice smaller aircooled transformers could be used which resulted in a lower weight. The cog-wheel system is System Abt.
These Locomotives drove between Zermatt, Visp and Brig.
